This memory game brings together 24 pairs of portraits of anonymous individuals taken in photobooths several decades ago. The visual artist Sylvie Meunier collected and curated these images.
The first photobooths appeared in the 1920s. Accessible to all and affordable, the automation of the process replaced the photographer's eye. With just a few coins, one could leave with their four self-portraits. Alone or with others, women, men, and children had fun, made faces, and staged themselves out of sight.
