Vincen Beeckman
About Vincen Beeckman
Vincen Beeckman (BE, 1973) lives and works in Brussels. He studied at the Institut des Hautes Études de Communications Sociales (IHECS, Brussels). He worked as a programmer at Recyclart (Brussels) from 2002 to 2020. Vincen is recognised as a creator of protean work, as Jean-Marc Bodson described him in 2018.
What distinguishes him as a photographer is his unconventional approach to visual art. He doesn't just capture images; he becomes an actor and performer himself in the photographic process. He designs collaborative photographic projects that closely involve the local population. For example, he organises exhibitions in public spaces, where passers-by can interact with his art in a spontaneous way.
Photographic approach of Vincen Beeckman
Beeckman’s photographic approach is centred on inclusivity, capturing moments "with people, all people", without worrying about following a particular style, or even less, conforming to the labels of contemporary art, as J-M Bodson points out.
Vincen Beeckman’s embodies the idea that art can transcend borders, bring diverse communities together and give a voice to those who are rarely heard. His unique artistic approach reflects his passion for exploration, inclusivity and the discovery of beauty in diversity. His work, whether exhibited in traditional galleries or in public spaces, invites us to reflect on the human condition, creativity and the power of art to create meaningful connections.
One of the most striking features of his work is his distribution of disposable cameras to migrants. This unique initiative allows displaced people to document their journey and experience in a personal and intimate way. The results of these projects are often poignant testimonies to the lives of migrants, depicting their hopes, challenges and resilience.
Exhibitions
His work is widely exhibited, both in Belgium (notably at Bozar, Central for Contemporary Art, Foundation A, FOMU, Galerie Eté 78, Gallery A, Hangar, Wiels) and across Europe, with notable exhibitions in Germany (Museum Folkwang), Lithuania, Portugal (Encontros da imagem festival), Switzerland (Espace jörg brockmann), France (Le château d’eau), Italy (Miafair) and Latvia (Latvian Museum of Photography).
