About Sylvie Bonnot

Sylvie Bonnot is a photographer and visual artist who lives and works in Burgundy. She graduated from the École National Superieur des arts de Dijon in 2006. Her artistic research focuses on photography and drawing. Through her work, she develops new ways of transforming images using a documentary approach. She is represented by Hangar Gallery.

Photographic approach of Sylvie Bonnot

Sylvie Bonnot is interested in the deformation of images, questioning our relationship to the living and to the photographic medium. Using the gesture of ‘moulting’, she proposes new futures images, by lifting the silver membrane from the photographs she brings back from her long-term research into the transformations of forests, as in the Guianese Amazon.

Sylvie Bonnot is an artist who travels far and wide, surveying forests from Guyana to Burgundy, and documenting the changes wrought by climate change on these natural spaces. The artist seeks to make photography more sensitive and so engages in a hand-to-hand relationship with the very material of the image. To do this, she removes the gelatine from her photos, which she then places on surfaces or volumes. She speaks of ‘moulting’, of the skin of the image that opens up new futures for photography.
