About Martin Parr

1952 – Born Epsom, Surrey, in the United Kingdom.

1970-73 – Studies photography at Manchester Polytechnic.

1994 – Martin Parr becomes a full member of Magnum Photographic Cooperative and begins to explore different photographic worlds, such as fashion and advertising.

2002 – The Barbican Art Gallery and the National Media Museum stage a major retrospective of his work that will then travel around Europe for 5 years.

2004-12 – Professor of photography at the University of Wales Newport.

2004 – Guest Artistic Director for Rencontres d’Arles.

2006 – Wins the Erich Salomon Prize, resulting in the Assorted Cocktail exhibition presented at the Photokina show in Cologne.

2008 – Guest curator of the New Typologies exhibition at the New York Photo Festival.

2008 - Parrworld opens at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, displaying his own collection of objects, postcards, photographs, photography books, and his new project, Luxury. The exhibition tours Europe for the following two years.

2008 – Awarded the Baume et Mercier Prize at PhotoEspana in recognition of his career and his contribution to contemporary photography.

2010 – Curator of the Brighton Photo Biennial.

2013 – Appointed visiting professor of photography at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.

2015 – Aperture magazine publishes The Chinese Photobook, a work about the history of Chinese photography books, created from the collaboration between Martin Parr and the two Dutch photographers forming WassinkLundgren.

2016 – The Strange and Familiar exhibition, curated by Martin Parr at the Barbican Art Gallery, is held in London. The show examines the way in which international photographers represented the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 1930s.

2017 – Receives the Sony World Photography Awards for his contribution to photography.

2017 - The Martin Parr Foundation opens in Bristol.

2013-17 – Martin Parr is president of Magnum Photos.

2019 – The Only Human exhibition opens at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The show focuses mainly on the concept of “Britishness”, explored through a series of projects examining the British identity.

2020 – The Frac Bretagne in Rennes is the first venue to display his new retrospective, Parrathon.

2021 – Hangar presents the first Martin Parr retrospective in Brussels.
